Getting a Puppy?

Welcoming a new pet into the family can be a bit overwhelming so we formulated this shopping list so you can make sure you have all the tools for a smooth introduction.

Such as Eukanuba, Iams, Nutrience, Nutro, Hills. Breed size specific and made from high quality ingredients, these foods ensure your puppy gets the best possible start

A wet food is not essential if feeding a premium dry diet. If you choose to feed wet food make sure it is a high quality product and preferably raw. Dog roll is not recommended as it is mostly water, contains low grade protein sources and a lot of fat

MEASURING SCOOP & STORAGE BIN

A scoop to measure meal portions & bin allows you to buy the larger, better value bags and still keep the food fresh once opened

Aids greatly in toilet training and provides your puppy with its very own bedroom for life

Absorbent pads, pad holders and pheromone drops encourage puppy to toilet where directed rather than all over the house

ENZYME BASED STAIN REMOVER

Thoroughly cleans puppy accidents and removes all odour. If stains are not thoroughly cleaned your puppy will be inclined to toilet there all the time. If it smells like a toilet to your puppy, then it probably is

INTESTINAL WORMER

A broad spectrum wormer such as Drontal that treats roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm

FLEA CONTROL

A monthly topical treatment is best. Look for Bravecto, Revolution, Advantage or similar.

ASSORTED TOYS

Keep a selection of toys in your repertoire so that you can rotate them every week. Have varying shapes, textures and sizes

TEETHING TOYS

Satisfies a puppies need to chew while getting new teeth through. Providing these toys reduces the temptation to chew on the furniture

COMPANION TOYS

A cuddly toy is important when taking your new puppy home as this could be his first night on his own since birth. Soft toys provide warmth and comfort and help reduce stress

BOREDOM BUSTING TOYS

These are toys like Kongs and puzzle treat balls. They can be filled with tasty treats that keep your puppy entertained for hours

CHEWING PREVENTATIVE

Nasty tasting spray-on products are available if you want to prevent unwanted chewing on furniture and the like

TRAINING TREATS

The best way to reward and reinforce your puppy’s good behaviour. Liver treats are perfect because they can be broken into tiny pieces so you can reward often without interfering with the dogs normal nutrition

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

Choose a puppy formulation. Regular bathing followed by brushing keeps the coat smooth and shiny and helps prevent constant shedding

GROOMING BRUSHES & COMBS

Choose tools that are suitable for your puppy’s coat length and comfortable in your hand. Grooming provides great bonding time so get your puppy used to brushing early so it is always an enjoyable experience

EYE & EAR CLEANERS

Important for puppies that have tear staining around the eyes or that have long furry ears

NAIL CLIPPERS

Keep nails nice and short. There are a variety of styles of nail clipper and starting young makes this sometimes stressful process a breeze

TOOTHPASTE & TOOTHBRUSH

Keeps teeth clean and breath fresh while helping prevent the need for expensive veterinary dental procedures in adulthood

FOOD & WATER BOWLS

Strong, durable and easy to keep clean. Dishwasher safe is best. The water bowl should be bigger than the food bowl

HARNESS AND LEAD

Harnesses help prevent choking when walking your puppy. Some brands double as a car restraint too

COATS & JUMPERS

For keeping warm and dry in cold weather

COLLAR & NAME TAG

Essential for easy identification should your puppy run away

CAR RESTRAINT OR BOOSTER SEAT

Vital to ensure your puppy is safe while traveling. Booster seats are great for small dogs and help reduce motion sickness

BEDDING
