Welcoming a new pet into the family can be a bit overwhelming so we formulated this shopping list so you can make sure you have all the tools for a smooth introduction

PREMIUM DRY FOOD

Such as Iams, Nutrience, Nutro, Hills. Specifically formulated from high quality ingredients, these foods ensure your kitten gets the best possible start

PREMIUM WET FOOD

A wet food is not essential if feeding a premium dry diet. If you choose to feed wet food make sure it is a high quality product. Raw cat mince or premium brand pouch foods are best and can help to ease the anxiety of moving to a new home

MEASURING SCOOP & STORAGE BIN

A scoop to measure meal portions & bin allows you to buy the larger, better value bags and still keep the food fresh once opened

FOOD & WATER BOWLS

Strong, durable and easy to keep clean. Dishwasher safe is best. The water bowl should be bigger than the food bowl

CARRY CAGE

An essential for safe car travel. The coziness and darkness in a carry cage actually helps your kitten or cat relax when traveling

LITTER

An essential for a young kitten. Litter comes in many forms but the most convenient type on the market is Litter Crystals.

LITTER TRAY

Whether hooded, high-sided or conventional, the litter tray should be easy for your kitten to get in and out of and should be made of plastic for easy cleaning

LITTER SCOOP

Not all scoops are created equal! Check which scoop suits the litter you have chosen. There should be holes big enough for the excess litter to fall through

LITTER LINERS

Allow you to easily dispose of used litter. No mess, no fuss

ENZYME BASED STAIN REMOVER

Thoroughly cleans kitten accidents and removes all odour. If stains are not thoroughly cleaned your kitten will be inclined to toilet there all the time. If it smells like a toilet to your kitten, then it probably is

INTESTINAL WORMER

A broad spectrum wormer such as Drontal that treats roundworm, hookworm, and tapeworm

FLEA CONTROL

A monthly topical treatment that breaks the flea life cycle is best. Look for brands like Advantage or Revolution

SCRATCHING POST OR FURNITURE

Scratching is a natural behaviour for all cats. Providing a place to scratch and stretch early on in your kitten’s life will help prevent unwanted attention being paid to the curtains and wallpaper

CATNIP – DRIED OR SPRAY

Catnip is a wonderful attractant for kittens and cats and works well when used on scratch poles

ASSORTED TOYS

Keep a selection of toys in your repertoire so that you can rotate them every week. Have varying shapes, textures and sizes

BOREDOM BUSTING TREAT BALLS

Treat balls can be filled with tasty treats that keep your kitten entertained for hours

TRAINING TREATS

The best way to reward and reinforce your kitten’s good behaviour. Treats work especially well when helping a family member who is nervous around cats get used interacting with them

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

Choose a kitten formulation. Regular bathing followed by brushing keeps the coat smooth and shiny and helps prevent constant shedding

GROOMING BRUSHES & COMBS

Choose tools that are suitable for kitten’s coat length and comfortable in your hand. Grooming provides great bonding time so get your kitten used to brushing early so it is always an enjoyable experience

NAIL CLIPPERS

Keep nails nice and short. There are a variety of styles of nail clipper and starting young makes this sometimes stressful process a breeze

TOOTHPASTE & TOOTHBRUSH

Keeps teeth clean and breath fresh while helping prevent the need for expensive veterinary dental procedures in adulthood

HARNESS & LEAD

A harness is perfect for introducing your kitten to the outside world. It gives the kitten freedom to move around while still allowing you to remain in control

COLLAR & NAME TAG

Essential for easy identification should your kitten run away. The bell on the collar is also good for warning native fauna of your cat’s presence

BEDDING

Soft bedding to keep kitten warm at night. Should be machine washable for ease of cleaning.Cats love to get up high, especially when frightened so try putting your cats bed on a shelf or on the back of the couch

CAT DOOR

Cat doors come in a variety of sizes and some have a variety of functions. Some require the cat to wear a magnet on the collar and some work via the cat’s microchip. Please ask if you are unsure which door to choose
